Sarnia wins tough contest against Leamington, 6-4

The game between the Sarnia Legionnaires and the Leamington Flyers was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Sarnia emerged with a 6-4 win.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Nathan Mater's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The Legionnaires got the win on the strength of a great game by Kyler Keating, who had one goal and three assists. Keating scored on the power play 15:25 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Sarnia. A head contact penalty on Kyle Quick had put Sarnia on the power play. Tyler Longo picked up the assist.

The Legionnaires were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on 10 chances.

Sarnia also got points from Jay Clarke, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Mater, who also registered two goals and one assist. Riley Babkirk also scored for Sarnia. More assists for Sarnia came via Bobby King, who had two and Riley Roberts, Brandon Layman, Cameron Clarke, and Tyler Prong, who each chipped in one.

Leamington's offense rang up 31 shots on Sarnia's net. The Flyers were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 43 penalty minutes.

Leamington was led by Thomas Virban, who had one goal and one assist. Virban scored on the power play 11:59 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Leamington. The Flyers had gotten the advantage when the Legionnaires' Ryan Trottier was sent off for holding. Matthew Opblinger assisted on the tally. Leamington also had goals scored by Cale Phibbs, Alex Friesen, and Chris Scott, who scored one goal each. In addition, Leamington received assists from Alex Derksen and Mitchell Amante, who contributed one each.

Sarnia's Hunter Johnson stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. The Legionnaires ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. Sarnia ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Davis Boyer was ejected from the game. Trevor Wheaton rejected 19 shots on goal for Leamington. The Flyers registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For Leamington, Ryan Muzzin was ejected from the game.
