Valencia Flyers vanquishes Ontario Avalanche in shootout, 6-5 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Valencia Flyers defeated Ontario Avalanche in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Valencia Flyers also got a shootout goal from Chase Thesman.

Valencia Flyers saw a four-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Valencia Flyers made the score 5-1 on a goal by Jason Hart at 8:08 in the second period. Ontario Avalanche evened things up at 5-5 on a goal by Basil Reynolds at 17:22 in the third period.

Hart had a great game for Valencia Flyers, netting two goals.

Valencia Flyers forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Valencia Flyers surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Valencia Flyers forced Ontario Avalanche's goaltenders to work without much rest, launching 36 shots and forcing 30 saves. Daniel Cepila made 21 stops and Chris Skeates made nine.

Valencia Flyers also got points from Ray Wilson, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Wil Barnett, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Valencia Flyers also got a goal from Eddie Cordero as well. More assists for Valencia Flyers came via Tyler Lazarek, Luc Whyte, and Evan Johnson, who contributed one each.

Ontario Avalanche's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game Ontario Avalanche had been spending in the box. Ontario Avalanche put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Valencia Flyers to score on any of its five power plays. Valencia Flyers was unable to stop Ontario Avalanche from sending pucks towards the net, and Ontario Avalanche eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

Ontario Avalanche was led by Antoine Maillard, who tallied two goals and one assist. Maillard scored the first of his two goals at 19:06 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Valencia Flyers. Maillard's next tally made the score 5-3 Valencia Flyers with 4:17 left in the second period. Paul Ramsey assisted on the tally. Ontario Avalanche additionally got points from Michael Thomas, who also registered one goal and one assist and Ramsey, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. In addition, Ontario Avalanche received assists from Nick Anderson, who had two and Adam Plonski, Scott McHaffie, and Zechariah Roberts, who each chipped in one.

Valencia Flyers' Silvan Delb stopped 38 shots out of the 43 that he faced. Ontario Avalanche registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
