Picton wins tough contest against Deseronto, 6-4

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Picton Pirates escaped with a 6-4 victory over the Deseronto Storm.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Phil Smith secured the win for Picton with a goal in the second period.

Smith was all over the ice for the Pirates, as he racked up two goals in the win.

Deseronto was unable to stop Picton from sending pucks towards the net, and the Pirates eventually piled up 63 shots on goal. Picton had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

Picton additionally got points from Taylor Brown, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points and Chris Jones, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Picton included Liam Hunter and Mitchell Merry, who scored one goal each. More assists for Picton came via Nolan Van Vlack, who had one, Austin Labelle, who had two, and Brian Bunnett, who had four.

The Storm was not heavily penalized during the game, and finished with nine minors and one major totalling 23 minutes. Deseronto ended up below its season average of 35.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Storm were helped by Brett Maracle, who registered one goal and one assist. Maracle scored 8:57 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Deseronto. Tyson OToole picked up the assist. Deseronto also got points from Jeff Hoey, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Mitchell Thompson, who also had one goal and one assist. Deseronto also got a goal from Devin MacLean as well. Other players who recorded assists for Deseronto were Brett Bateman and Brodie Maracle, who each chipped in two.

The Pirates' Brock Tufts stopped 23 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Picton ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. The Pirates ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mitch Burke was ejected from the game. Aaron Young made 57 saves for Deseronto on 63 shots. The Storm registered one goal on two power play opportunities. For Deseronto, Greg Massicotte was ejected from the game.
