Amherstview wins tough contest against Deseronto, 3-2

The Amherstview Jets gutted out a close 3-2 win against the Deseronto Storm.

No lead was more than one goal during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Cody Smith at 19:17 of the second period.

Amherstview's penalty kill excelled, as the Jets gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Amherstview was paced by Smith, who registered one goal.

The Jets stifled Deseronto's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Amherstview forced the Storm goalie Matt Loveys to work between the pipes, taking 65 shots.

Amherstview also had goals scored by Adam Alcorn and Mike McKitrick, who each put in one. In addition, Amherstview received assists from Jesse Stone, Zach Masterson, and Ryan Hutchinson, who contributed one each.

Deseronto put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Jets to score on any of their nine power plays. The Storm's offense rang up 37 shots on Amherstview's net. Deseronto was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 32 penalty minutes.

The Storm were helped by Jared Boomhower, who tallied one goal. Boomhower scored 15:41 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Mitch Goodfellow picked up the assist. Deseronto also got a goal from Tyler Diamond as well. More assists for Deseronto came via Johnny Maracle, who had one.

Graeme Gemmill-Peters recorded 35 saves for the Jets. Amherstview incurred 52 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Deseronto's Loveys stopped 62 shots out of the 65 that he faced.
