Blenheim hangs on, beats Wheatley 3-1Blenheim Memorial Arena Sun, Jan 04, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Blenheim Blades took the lead against the Wheatley Sharks in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 3-1 victory. Nolan VandenBoorn provided Blenheim with the game-winning tally when he scored 13:00 into the first period.The Blades were led by goalie Klinton Kenney, who finished with 31 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Kenney will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.03. Wheatley's power play was ineffective against Blenheim's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. The Blades excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Blenheim was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 44 penalty minutes. The Blades were helped by Justin Baker, who grabbed one goal. Baker scored 7:48 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Blenheim. VandenBoorn picked up the assist. Blenheim also got points from VandenBoorn, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Kellen Kaniecki also scored for Blenheim. More assists for Blenheim came via Blair Derynck, who had one. The Sharks stifled Blenheim's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Wheatley could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Sharks put an average of 3.4 pucks into the net per game. Wheatley's offense rang up 32 shots on the Blades' net. The Sharks were led by Brett Bowman, who scored the team's only goal. Bowman scored 2:48 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Blenheim. Scott Florence provided the assist. Blenheim registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. Adam Leboeuf made 25 saves for Wheatley on 28 shots. The Sharks incurred 48 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Wheatley ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brendon Anger was ejected from the game.
