Anger leads Wheatley over Amherstburg, 7-2

Brendon Anger had two goals and two assists to lead the Wheatley Sharks to a 7-2 victory over the Amherstburg Admirals.

Anger scored on the power play at 11:20 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Wheatley and again while 4:05 into the second to make the score 4-1 Wheatley.

Amherstburg's power play was ineffective against Wheatley's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:40 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Sharks racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Wheatley surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Sharks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Wheatley forced the Admirals goalie Gianfranco Donato to work between the pipes, taking 52 shots. The Sharks found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Wheatley averages 3.5 goals per game.

Wheatley additionally got points from Brett Bowman, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Wheatley included Scott Florence, Jesse Margerison, Michael Travis, and Frankie Ciacelli, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Chris Warkentin, who had two, Mike Reid, who had three, and Jimmy Ciacelli, Lucas Raffoul, Brian Johnson, and Nolan Gardiner, who contributed one each.

Amherstburg forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 17 minors and two majors for 64 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 31.0 minutes per game the Admirals had been spending in the box. Amherstburg was held below its usual level of production. The Admirals put an average of 4.6 pucks into the net per game. The Sharks were unable to stop Amherstburg from sending pucks towards the net, and the Admirals eventually piled up 42 shots on goal.

Amherstburg was led by Mark Gangnon, who tallied one goal. Gangnon scored 8:29 into the first period to make the score 1-1. James Brooks picked up the assist. Amherstburg also got a goal from Chad Copeland as well. In addition, Amherstburg received assists from Cole Martyniuk, Mark Sobocan, and Jordan Luciw, who each chipped in one.

Wheatley's Conner MacKinnon stopped 40 shots out of the 42 that he faced. The Sharks registered three goals on 16 power play opportunities. Team's Raffoul and Gardiner were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Donato recorded 45 saves for the Admirals. For Amherstburg, Blake Rutckyj was ejected from the game.
