GAME RECAP

Essex takes care of Blenheim early, wins 7-0

Blenheim Memorial Arena    Sun, Dec 21, 2014

The Essex 73s opened up a four-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 7-0 win over the Blenheim Blades.

Tyler Scott was all over the ice for Essex, as he tallied two goals and three assists in the win. Scott scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Essex. The 73s had gotten the advantage when Blenheim's Hunter Burk was sent off for slashing. Nick Mainella assisted on the tally. Scott's next tally on the power play made the score 5-0 Essex with 10:15 left in the second period. Essex earned a power play opportunity when Bryan Boersma was put in the box for hooking. Mainella picked up the assist.

The Blades' power play was ineffective against the 73s' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:40 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Essex's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the 73s had been spending in the box. Essex excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. The 73s kept Blenheim's goalie busy throughout the game, and Eric Stewardson made 33 saves on 40 shots.

Essex also got points from Matthew Hebert, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Essex included Brad Carroll, Jordan Ryan, Tyler Turner, and Michael Vieira, who scored one goal each. More assists for Essex came via Matthew Rosati, who had two, Scott Bromley, who had three, and William Stadder and Daniel Slipchuk, who each chipped in one.

The Blades could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Blenheim averages 3.0 goals per game. The Blades' penalty kill unit could not stop Essex's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

Noah Hedrick recorded 23 saves for the 73s. For Essex, Rosati was ejected from the game. Blenheim ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. The Blades ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Derek Muzzatti was ejected from the game.
