Raffoul nets hat trick, leads Wheatley to 7-3 win over Wallaceburg

A hat trick by Lucas Raffoul was the highlight in Sharks' 7-3 win against the Wallaceburg Lakers.

Raffoul notched his first tally 1:44 into the second period. He then added goals at 16:12 into the second and at 19:38 into the second.

Wallaceburg's 11 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Lakers let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

The Wheatley Sharks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Wheatley surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The Sharks forced Wallaceburg's netminders to work all game long, totaling 45 shots and forcing 38 saves. Joel Sowinski made 24 stops and Scotty Gray made 14. Wheatley bested its season scoring average. The Sharks average 3.3 goals per game.

Wheatley additionally got points from Austin Thompson, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Others who scored for Wheatley included Scott Florence and Conor Marontate, who scored one goal each. More assists for Wheatley came via Jimmy Ciacelli and Brian Johnson, who contributed one each and Brett Bowman, Michael Travis, and Nolan Gardiner, who each chipped in three.

The Lakers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game Wallaceburg had been spending in the box. The Lakers forced Wheatley's goaltenders to work in net, launching 39 shots and forcing 36 saves. Conner MacKinnon made 35 stops and Adam Leboeuf made one. Wallaceburg had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

The Lakers were led by Trevor Waller, who registered one goal. Waller scored 16:07 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Tyler Shaw assisted on the tally. Wallaceburg also had goals scored by Josh Berkvens and Alex Ritchie, who each put in one. In addition, Wallaceburg received assists from Mike Brown, Jacob Theoret, and Brock Daugherty, who contributed one each.

Wallaceburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cory Lucier was ejected from the game.
