Amherstburg uses big second period to beat Wheatley, 5-1

The Wheatley Sharks was within striking distance after one period, but the Amherstburg Admirals put the pedal down in the second en route to a 5-1 victory.

Amherstburg's penalty kill excelled, as the Admirals gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Amherstburg was paced by Steven Spada, who registered one goal. Spada scored 4:49 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Amherstburg. Mark Sobocan picked up the assist.

The Admirals forced Wheatley's goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, taking 37 shots and forcing 32 saves. Conner MacKinnon made 27 stops and Adam Leboeuf made five. Amherstburg's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Amherstburg also got points from Dan Matoski, who also had one goal and two assists. James Brooks also scored for Amherstburg. More assists for Amherstburg came via Brett Banwell and Dean Patterson, who each chipped in one.

The Sharks' offense operated below their season average. Wheatley averages 3.3 goals per game.

The Admirals' Arren Romeril stopped 24 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Amherstburg incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Sharks incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. For Wheatley, Jimmy Ciacelli and Lucas Raffoul were ejected from the contest.
