Mooretown falls to Alvinston in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Warwick Township Arena Fri, Sep 26, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Clint Rose gave the Alvinston Flyers a 5-4 (OT) victory over the Mooretown Flags when he scored 4:25 into the extra period. Although Alvinston was up by as many as two goals in the second period, Mooretown kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Flags got to within 4-3 on a goal by Ryan Lyle at 12:13 in the third period. The Flyers got the win behind a great game by Karsten Berg, who had two goals and two assists. Berg scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:29 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Alvinston. Alvinston earned a power play opportunity when Aiden Chapdalaine was put in the box for high sticking. Rose provided the assist. Berg's next tally on the power play made the score 4-2 Alvinston with 5:36 left in the second period. The Flyers had gained a power play chance when Ethan Dupont was whistled for holding. Eric Marsh picked up the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:42 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. Alvinston forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. Alvinston forced Mooretown goalie Brandon Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots. The Flyers found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Alvinston has scored at the pace of 2.8 goals per game during the current campaign. The Flyers cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring four goals on seven chances. Alvinston also got points from Rose, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Joe Archer, who also registered one goal and two assists. Kole Keating also scored for Alvinston. The Flags' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Mooretown surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game. Alvinston was unable to stop the Flags from sending pucks towards the net, and Mooretown eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Mooretown also got a goal from Kyle Smith as well. In addition, Mooretown received assists from Colton Osbourne and Matt Brandon, who each chipped in one and Justin Vanbuskirk and Brett Thompson, who contributed two each. The Flyers' Cam MacAlpine stopped 32 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Alvinston ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kirklin Dorman was ejected from the game. Brandon Johnson made 32 saves for the Flags on 37 shots. Mooretown registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Team's Austin Hewton and Justin Melo were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
