Walkerton pulls away in second, rolls over Mount Forest, 9-2

The Mount Forest Patriots was within striking distance after one period, but the Walkerton Hawks put the pedal down in the second en route to a 9-2 victory.

Walkerton got the win on the strength of a great game by Carter Franks, who had one goal and two assists. Franks scored 1:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Walkerton. Ryan Hamelin picked up the assist.

The Hawks pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 14 penalty minutes.

Walkerton put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mount Forest to score on any of its six power plays. The Hawks kept the Patriots' goalie busy throughout the game, and John Nixon made 32 saves on 41 shots. Walkerton's goal total was higher than its season average. The Hawks have scored at the pace of 5.5 goals per game during the current campaign. Walkerton got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Walkerton also got points from CJ Arthur, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Jay Thomson, who also had one goal and one assist, and Hamelin, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Walkerton included Calvin Penney, who had two and Brooks Nelthorpe, Alex Perrault, and Brandon Lamothe, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Skylar Robertson, who had two and Josh Deyell, Chris Gillman, Lauchlin Elder, and Brett Coulson, who each chipped in one.

Mount Forest's offense operated below its season average. The Patriots average 4.1 goals per game.

Mount Forest was led by Kyle Hunter, who registered one goal and one assist. Hunter scored 2:30 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Walkerton. Mount Forest also had goals scored by Luke Richardson and Brady Becker, who each put in one. More assists for Mount Forest came via Trevor Hughson, who had one.

Erik Angeli recorded 26 saves for the Hawks. Walkerton registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Penney was ejected from the game. The Patriots ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. For Mount Forest, Cody Wright was ejected from the game.
