Hamelin leads Walkerton over Mitchell, 7-4

Behind a great game by Ryan Hamelin, who had two goals and two assists, the Walkerton Hawks defeated the Mitchell Hawks, 7-4.

Hamelin scored at 19:14 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Walkerton and again while 4:49 into the third to make the score 5-3 Walkerton.

Walkerton's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Mitchell power plays.

Walkerton also got points from Lauchlin Elder, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Skylar Robertson, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Walkerton also got a goal from Austin Russell as well. In addition, Walkerton received assists from CJ Arthur, who had one.

Mitchell's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Hawks had been spending in the box. Mitchell stifled the Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Walkerton was unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Mitchell eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

The Hawks were helped by Jake Finlayson, who registered one goal. Finlayson scored 9:03 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Matt Van DeWalle assisted on the tally. Mitchell additionally got points from Van DeWalle, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Mitchell included Adam Zehr and Blake Buchanan(AP), who scored one goal each. More assists for Mitchell came via Joe McCarthy and Bayley Boyes, who contributed one each.

The Hawks' Tristan Lewis stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Walkerton totaled 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play. For the Hawks, Brett Coulson was ejected from the game. Clay Carter made 20 saves for Mitchell on 26 shots. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Wil Marcy was ejected from the game.
