Wingham rides Nelson to victory over Mitchell, 6-1

Ben Nelson stood on his head and made 29 saves to lead the Wingham Ironmen to a 6-1 victory over the Mitchell Hawks.

Wingham was paced by Matt McCracken, who grabbed one goal and one assist. McCracken scored 6:27 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Wingham.

The Ironmen put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mitchell to score on any of its five power plays. The Hawks were unable to stop Wingham from sending pucks towards the net, and the Ironmen eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

Wingham also got points from Josh Stewart, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Wingham also had goals scored by Brett Brophy, Holdyn Lansink, Travis Bender, and Jeremy Ross, who scored one goal each. In addition, Wingham received assists from Keifer MacInnes, Greg Scott, and Carter Stewart, who contributed one each.

Mitchell's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Wingham power plays.

The Hawks were led by Matt Van DeWalle, who scored the team's only goal. Van DeWalle scored 8:36 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Wingham. Josh Den Otter assisted on the tally.

Wingham ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Clay Carter made 37 saves for Mitchell on 43 shots. The Hawks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
