The Wingham Ironmen used a sparkling performance by Ben Nelson to take down the Walkerton Hawks, as the netminder did not allow a goal in Wingham's 2-0 shutout victory. The Ironmen were led by Greg Scott, who grabbed one goal. Scott scored 14:27 into the third period to make the score 1-0 Wingham. Josh Higgins assisted on the tally. Wingham put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Walkerton to score on any of its four power plays. The Ironmen's offense operated below their season average. Wingham averages 4.3 goals per game. The Ironmen's defensive effort looked to be improved. Wingham averages 2.8 goals allowed per game. Cody Lang also scored for Wingham. In addition, Wingham received assists from Darren Kerr and Matt McCracken, who each chipped in one. The Hawks stifled the Ironmen's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Walkerton could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Hawks put an average of 5.1 pucks into the net per game. Walkerton's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Hawks finished with 28 penalty minutes. Ben Nelson made 25 saves for Wingham on 25 shots. The Ironmen incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Tristan Lewis rejected 14 shots on goal for Walkerton. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Calvin Penney was ejected from the game.
