Hanover falls to Wingham in overtime, 6-5 (OT)

The Wingham Ironmen pulled out a 6-5 (OT) overtime victory over the Hanover Barons on a clutch goal by Brett Brophy.

Wingham came back from a four-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Ironmen fell behind 5-1 after a goal by Hanover's Maxwell Barclay at 5:56 in the second period. Wingham knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Brophy at 18:59 in the third period.

Brophy had two goals and one assist to lead the Ironmen.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:15 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Wingham found itself short handed often, totaling 23 penalty minutes and allowing nine power plays. The Ironmen's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Wingham also got points from Holdyn Lansink, who also racked up one goal and three assists to lead the team in points and Jordan Skerrett, who also registered one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Wingham included Matt McCracken and Ryan McNeil, who each put in one. In addition, Wingham received assists from Ben Nelson and Bailey Poels, who each chipped in one.

Wingham was unable to stop the Barons from sending pucks towards the net, and Hanover eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Barons got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Hanover was led by Trent Bell, who tallied one goal and one assist. Bell scored on the power play 5:24 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Hanover. The Barons earned a power play opportunity when Carter Stewart was put in the box for cross checking. Justin D Graham assisted on the tally. Hanover additionally got points from Graham, who also had one goal and one assist and Barclay, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Hanover also had goals scored by Mitchell Pike and Garrett Reed, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Hanover were Garrett Weigel, who had two and Brodie Lemay and Tyson Soers, who contributed one each.

Ben Nelson made 26 saves for the Ironmen on 31 shots. Wingham registered four goals on eight power play opportunities. For the Ironmen, Jordie Schneider was ejected from the game. Hanover's Gord Walmsley stopped 23 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Barons ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. Hanover ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Bell was ejected from the game.
