Walkerton shrugs off penalties, upends Mitchell, 6-2Mitchell Arena Sun, Oct 26, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Walkerton Hawks' penalty kill was superb, as Walkerton survived multiple penalties to beat the Mitchell Hawks, 6-2. The Hawks were led by Matt Shields, who had one goal. Shields scored on the power play 1:23 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Walkerton. Calvin Penney picked up the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 10:54 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. Walkerton's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and three majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. Walkerton kept Mitchell's goalie busy throughout the game, and Clay Carter made 37 saves on 43 shots. Walkerton also got points from Penney, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Ryan Hamelin, who also registered one goal and one assist. Walkerton also got a goal from Austin Russell as well. In addition, Walkerton received assists from Josh Deyell, who had two and Jay Thomson, Alex Perrault, and Brett Coulson, who contributed one each. The Hawks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Mitchell had been spending in the box. The Hawks' offense rang up 40 shots on the Hawks' net. Mitchell was helped by Bayley Boyes, who tallied one goal. Boyes scored on the power play 8:16 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mitchell. The Hawks earned a power play opportunity when Hamelin was put in the box for cross checking. Kyle Spence assisted on the tally. Josh Den Otter also scored for Mitchell. More assists for Mitchell came via Jerry Ennet and Trevor MacDonald, who each chipped in one. Tristan Lewis made 38 saves for Walkerton on 40 shots. The Hawks registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Brooks Nelthorpe, Chris Gillman, and Coulson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Mitchell registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For the Hawks, Ethan Adair and Scott Fries were ejected from the contest.
