Elder's hat trick boosts Walkerton over Mount Forest, 8-5

Lauchlin Elder netted a hat trick to lead the Walkerton Hawks over the Mount Forest Patriots, 8-5.

Elder's first goal came 7:07 into the first period. He then added goals at 8:54 into the second and at 14:54 into the third.

Walkerton forced Patriots' goalies to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots and forcing 27 saves. Cole Wardlaw made 18 stops and John Nixon made nine. The Hawks gave up more goals than its normal season average. Walkerton averages 2.3 goals allowed per game. The Hawks was effective with a man advantage, and put in three goals while on the power play. Walkerton could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 40 minutes in penalties during the game.

Walkerton also got points from Calvin Penney, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Brett Coulson, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Brandon Lamothe, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Walkerton included CJ Arthur and Brooks Nelthorpe, who scored one goal each. In addition, Walkerton received assists from Jay Thomson, Alex Perrault, Brendan Welsh, Tyler Cunningham, and Austin Russell, who each chipped in one and Josh Deyell and Ryan Hamelin, who contributed two each.

Mount Forest was helped by Mitch Betts, who racked up one goal and two assists. Betts scored on the power play 12:07 into the first period to make the score 3-2 Walkerton. The Patriots had gotten the advantage when the Hawks' Arthur was sent off for cross checking. Brad Binkle provided the assist. Mount Forest additionally got points from Luke Richardson, who also registered one goal and two assists and Trevor Hughson, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Mount Forest also had goals scored by Doug Ardis and Doug Costanzo, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Mount Forest were Brady Becker, Brendon Aitken, and Josh Perdue, who each chipped in one.

Walkerton's Tristan Lewis stopped 22 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Mount Forest incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
