Norwich uses big second period to beat Wellesley, 11-4

The Norwich Merchants scored five goals in the second period to pull away from the Wellesley Applejacks and clinch an 11-4 win.

Norwich got the win behind a great game by Jamie Kelly, who had two goals and two assists. Kelly scored the first of his two goals at 14:56 into the second period to make the score 7-2 Norwich. Braeden Shand provided the assist. Kelly's next tally made the score 10-2 Norwich with 16:08 left in the third period. Troy Lamoure assisted on the tally.

Wellesley fell victim to a deadly the Merchants power play, which ripped the Applejacks for five goals.

Norwich forced Applejacks' netminders to work between the pipes, racking up 46 shots and forcing 35 saves. Tim Bester made 27 stops and Keaton Weiss made eight. The Merchants excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Norwich bested its season scoring average. The Merchants have scored at the pace of 3.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Norwich were also effective in Wellesley's zone, and came away with three goals.

Norwich additionally got points from Kurtis Lavis, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Zack Morrison, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Lamoure, who also had one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Norwich included Mitchell Berzins, who had two and Alex Daley, Brandon Velda, Dalton Alford, and Darcey Butler, who each put in one. In addition, Norwich received assists from Matt Zilke, who had one.

The Applejacks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 14 minors and three majors for 53 minutes in penalty time. Wellesley surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Applejacks were helped by Sean McEwan, who grabbed one goal. McEwan scored 14:26 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Jake Wilkinson provided the assist. Wellesley also got points from Wilkinson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Wellesley also had goals scored by Tyler Seguin and Alex Uttley, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Wellesley were Hayden Stewart and Justin Lebold, who each chipped in one and Cal Jefferies and Matt Schieck, who contributed two each.

Jesse Schoeman made 19 saves for the Merchants on 23 shots. Norwich incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. For Wellesley, Paul Morra, Tysen Willemsen, and Justin Plant were ejected from the contest.
