Merritt nets hat trick, leads Burford to 5-2 win over Delhi

A hat trick by Connor Merritt was the highlight in Bulldogs' 5-2 win against the Delhi Travellers.

Merritt's first goal came 12:18 into the second period. He then added goals at 1:25 into the third and at 12:10 into the third.

The Burford Bulldogs pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 27 penalty minutes.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:02 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Burford stifled Delhi's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Burford also had goals scored by Kyle Walker and Adam Harris, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Burford were Ryan Cadwell, who had two and Matt Dipaolo, Chris Grand, and Jesse Brooks, who contributed one each.

The Travellers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances.

Delhi was helped by Ryan MacLeod, who grabbed one goal. MacLeod scored 7:07 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Burford. Taylor Hockley provided the assist. Brendan Schreider also scored for Delhi. More assists for Delhi came via Scott Peirsson, Jarred Ebdon, and Kelsey Van Ymeren, who each chipped in one.

The Bulldogs' Michael Black stopped 23 shots out of the 25 that he faced. For Burford, Grand was ejected from the game. Mike Harrison rejected 22 shots on goal for the Travellers. Delhi totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-6 on the power play. The Travellers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Lynaugh was ejected from the game.
