New Hamburg downs Woodstock in overtime, 3-2 (OT)Wilmot Recreation Complex Fri, Jan 02, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
Colin Martin gave the New Hamburg Firebirds a 3-2 (OT) victory over the Woodstock Navy Vets when he scored 15 seconds into the extra period. Although New Hamburg was up by as many as two goals in the second period, Woodstock kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Navy Vets got to within 2-1 on a power play goal by Austin Richardson at 12:17 in the third period. The Firebirds were paced by Martin, who had one goal. New Hamburg also had goals scored by Kory Nowak and Jaden Goetz, who scored one goal each. More assists for New Hamburg came via Jerry Ennett, Jay Fried, David Jennings, Garrett Pollock, and Carter Tracey, who each chipped in one. Woodstock stifled New Hamburg's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Navy Vets forced the Firebirds goalie Ryan Purcell to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. Woodstock was led by Mike Gillespie, who registered one goal and one assist. Gillespie scored on the power play 17:14 into the third period to make the score 2-2. The Navy Vets had taken the advantage when New Hamburg's Brandon Quan got sent off for cross checking. Jake Schneider provided the assist. In addition, Woodstock received assists from Justin Elms, who had one. The Firebirds' Purcell stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. New Hamburg incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Michael Roefs rejected 25 shots on goal for Woodstock. The Navy Vets incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. For Woodstock, Garrett Whetham was ejected from the game.
