Norwich falls apart in second, loses to Ayr, 9-2

The Ayr Centennials scored five goals in the second period to pull away from the Norwich Merchants and clinch a 9-2 win.

Ayr got the win with help from a great game by Anthony Pullia, who had two goals and two assists. Pullia scored the first of his two goals at 10:35 into the second period to make the score 4-0 Ayr. Eric Hackborn picked up the assist. Pullia's next tally made the score 9-2 Ayr with 14:08 left in the third period. Quinn Diamond provided the assist.

The Centennials' penalty kill excelled, as Ayr gave up one goal despite allowing nine power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:48 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Centennials forced Norwich's netminders to work all game long, getting 36 shots and forcing 27 saves. Jesse Schoeman made 14 stops and Patrick Maziarz made 13. Ayr surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Centennials have scored at the pace of 5.8 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Ayr were also effective in the Merchants' zone, and came away with two goals.

Ayr additionally got points from Diamond, who also registered two goals and one assist, Brendan Schaefer, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points, and Sean Mitchell, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Ayr also had goals scored by Andrew Richard, who had two and Mackenzie Kemp and Jake Whibbs, who scored one goal each. In addition, Ayr received assists from Connor MacLean, who had one and Jeff Howlett, who had two.

Norwich's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Ayr power plays. The Merchants kept the Centennials' goalie busy throughout the game, and Will Rawski made 30 saves on 32 shots.

Others who scored for Norwich included Mitchell Berzins and Kyle Sault, who each put in one. More assists for Norwich came via Kurtis Lavis, Jesse Szabo, and Drake Morrell, who contributed one each.

Ayr ended with 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major. The Centennials ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mitchell was ejected from the game. Norwich ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For the Merchants, Matt Zilke was ejected from the game.
