New Hamburg beats Woodstock 8-6 after comeback scare

The Woodstock Navy Vets tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the New Hamburg Firebirds held on for an 8-6 victory.

New Hamburg made the score 8-5 on a goal by Chris Eckert at 11:42 in the third period, and Woodstock got as close as 8-6 when Mackenzie Langford scored 19:36 into the third period.

The Firebirds forced the Navy Vets' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 33 shots and forcing 25 saves. Jackson Swindells made 23 stops and Michael Roefs made two. New Hamburg outdid its season average for goals scored. The Firebirds average 4.6 goals per game. New Hamburg's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. The Firebirds struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 28 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays.

New Hamburg was helped by Tyler Hoffman, who grabbed three goals and one assist. New Hamburg also got points from Tyler Randerson, who also finished with one goal and three assists, Kory Nowak, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Brandon Quan, who also had one goal and one assist. New Hamburg also got a goal from Quinten Haddock as well. More assists for New Hamburg came via Carter Tracey, who had two and Jay Fried, Matt Bedforth, Andrew Boer, Brodie Muckler, and Jaden Goetz, who each chipped in one.

Woodstock's offense rang up 32 shots on the Firebirds' net. The Navy Vets' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Woodstock averages 3.8 goals per contest. The Navy Vets could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game.

Woodstock was helped by Jake Schneider, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Schneider scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 8:44 into the first period to make the score 2-1 New Hamburg. The Navy Vets had gained a power play chance when Fried was whistled for roughing. Justin Elms picked up the assist. Schneider's next tally on the power play made the score 4-2 New Hamburg with 17:45 left in the second period. Austin Richardson assisted on the tally. Woodstock additionally got points from Dylan Wettlaufer, who also registered two goals and one assist. Dan Haig also scored for Woodstock. Other players who recorded assists for Woodstock were Mike Gillespie, who had two.

Ryan Purcell rejected 26 shots on goal for New Hamburg. The Firebirds registered three goals on six power play opportunities.
