Berzins leads Norwich over Burford, 6-1

Mitchell Berzins was all over the ice for the Norwich Merchants, as he tallied one goal and three assists in Norwich's 6-1 win over the Burford Bulldogs.

Berzins scored short handed 10:03 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Norwich. The Merchants played down a man on Jamie Kelly's checking from behind. Patrick Maziarz provided the assist. Berzins dished an assist on Braeden Shand's goal that made the score 1-0 Norwich at 8:23 into the first period. He then added assists on Riley Monture's goal at 6:09 into the second and on Drake Morrell's goal at 12:51 into the third.

Burford's power play was ineffective against Norwich's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:22 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Merchants' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. Norwich surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Merchants' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Burford power plays. Norwich's offense rang up 36 shots on the Bulldogs' net. The Merchants bested their season scoring average. Norwich averages 3.2 goals per game. The defensemen of the Merchants were also effective in Burford's zone, and came away with two goals.

Norwich also got points from Monture, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Kurtis Lavis, who also had one goal and one assist, and Morrell, who also registered one goal and one assist. Jordan Gillis also scored for Norwich. Other players who recorded assists for Norwich were Kyle Sault and Dalton Alford, who contributed one each.

The Bulldogs racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game Burford had been spending in the box. The Bulldogs did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Burford puts an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game.

The Bulldogs were led by Jesse Brooks, who scored the team's only goal. Brooks scored 16:12 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Norwich. Adam Harris assisted on the tally.

Maziarz recorded 23 saves for Norwich. The Merchants registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Team's Shand, Kelly, and Jesse Szabo were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Burford's Michael Black stopped 30 shots out of the 36 that he faced. For the Bulldogs, Blaise Burtnick and Brooks were ejected from the contest.
