Woodstock squeaks by New Hamburg, 3-2

The Woodstock Navy Vets gutted out a close 3-2 win against the New Hamburg Firebirds.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Mike Gillespie secured the win for Woodstock with a goal in the third period.

Gillespie had a great game for the Navy Vets, netting two goals.

Woodstock excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Woodstock also got a goal from Dylan Wettlaufer as well. In addition, Woodstock received assists from Max Coyle, Jake Schneider, and Dan Haig, who contributed one each.

New Hamburg stifled the Navy Vets' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Firebirds' offense operated below their season average. New Hamburg averages 4.1 goals per game.

The Firebirds were helped by Tyler Hoffman, who racked up one goal. Hoffman scored 14:18 into the first period to make the score 1-0 New Hamburg. Anthony Osterling picked up the assist. Quinten Haddock also scored for New Hamburg. More assists for New Hamburg came via Jay Fried and Chris Eckert, who each chipped in one.

Michael Roefs made 28 saves for Woodstock on 30 shots. The Navy Vets incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Ryan Purcell recorded 16 saves for New Hamburg. The Firebirds incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
