Tavistock hangs on, beats New Hamburg 2-0

The Tavistock Braves beat the New Hamburg Firebirds, 2-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Shaun Pickering provided Tavistock with the game-winning tally when he scored 9:19 into the first period. Angus Rowland provided the assist.

The Braves were boosted by Ben Larder, who turned in a shutout with 32 saves. Larder managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.23 prior to the game.

Tavistock was led by Pickering, who finished with one goal.

The Braves were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 34.0 minutes per game Tavistock had been spending in the box. The Braves stifled New Hamburg's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Dylan Yantzi also scored for Tavistock. In addition, Tavistock received assists from Tayler Trachsel, who had one.

The Firebirds' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and three majors for 57 minutes in penalty time. New Hamburg surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Firebirds' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Tavistock power plays. New Hamburg could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Firebirds put an average of 4.3 pucks into the net per game. New Hamburg forced Tavistock goalie Larder to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Team's Maverick Petrie and Tristan Hohl were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Firebirds' Ryan Purcell stopped 24 shots out of the 26 that he faced. New Hamburg registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. For the Firebirds, Jay Fried, Ben Playfair, Brandon Quan, and Jaden Goetz were ejected from the contest.
