Morrell's big game bests Delhi in 8-2 Norwich win

Drake Morrell had one goal and four assists to lead the Norwich Merchants to an 8-2 victory over the Delhi Travellers.

Morrell beat Mike Harrison with a shot 8:23 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Norwich. Mitchell Berzins provided the assist. Morrell dished an assist on Matt Zilke's goal that made the score 4-1 Norwich at 10:08 into the second period. He then added assists on Derek Slaght's goal at 10:39 into the second, on Zack Morrison's goal at 16:29 into the second, and on Kurtis Lavis's goal at 17:17 into the second.

Delhi's power play was ineffective against Norwich's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Merchants forced the Travellers' goaltenders to work all game long, getting 35 shots and forcing 27 saves. Harrison made 21 stops and Nick Heath made six. Norwich stifled Delhi's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Merchants outdid their season average for goals scored. Norwich averages 3.4 goals per game.

Norwich also got points from Lavis, who also registered one goal and one assist, Berzins, who also finished with one goal and four assists, Slaght, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Morrison, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Norwich also had goals scored by Brandon Velda and Ryan Stephenson, who each put in one. In addition, Norwich received assists from Riley Monture, Nick Fedak, Jordan Gillis, and Harlen Vanwynsberghe, who each chipped in one.

The Travellers were helped by M.J. Barnes, who registered one goal. Barnes scored 5:09 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Norwich. Kelsey Van Ymeren picked up the assist. Nevin Guenther also scored for Delhi. More assists for Delhi came via Quinn Gaetz, who had one.

Patrick Maziarz rejected 21 shots on goal for the Merchants. Norwich incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Merchants, Jesse Szabo was ejected from the game. Delhi incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Travellers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Steve Barati was ejected from the game.
