Ayr holds on for 5-4 win against WoodstockWoodstock Community Center Fri, Oct 24, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Woodstock Navy Vets tried their best to erase a five-goal deficit, but the Ayr Centennials would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4. Ayr made the score 5-0 on a goal by Austin Kovrig at 4:58 in the second period, and Woodstock got as close as 5-4 when Mackenzie Langford scored 14:35 into the third period. The Centennials pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 21 penalty minutes. Ayr put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Navy Vets to score on any of their eight power plays. The Centennials were led by Jeff Howlett, who registered two goals and one assist. Howlett scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:51 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Ayr. Ayr had taken the advantage when Woodstock's Jake Schneider got sent off for roughing after whistle. Andrew Richard assisted on the tally. Howlett's next tally on the power play made the score 3-0 Ayr with 8:32 left in the first period. Richard picked up the assist. Ayr additionally got points from Brendan Schaefer, who also had one goal and one assist. Connor MacLean also scored for Ayr. In addition, Ayr received assists from Eric Hackborn, who had one and Kevan Hadad and Anthony Pullia, who each chipped in two. The Navy Vets forced the Centennials goalie Will Rawski to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots. Woodstock was led by Mike Gillespie, who racked up two goals and one assist. Gillespie scored the first of his two goals at 14:53 into the second period to make the score 5-1 Ayr. Chris Nauts provided the assist. Gillespie's next tally made the score 5-3 Ayr with 6:26 left in the third period. Schneider picked up the assist. Woodstock also got points from Braden Hutchison, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Woodstock were Tyler Lyons, who had one. Ayr's Rawski stopped 42 shots out of the 46 that he faced. The Centennials registered two goals on six power play opportunities. For Ayr, Jake Whibbs was ejected from the game. Jackson Swindells made seven saves before being replaced by Michael Roefs, who took the loss and made 16 saves. The Navy Vets ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. Woodstock ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jeremy Racicot was ejected from the game.
