Lupton nets hat trick, leads Tavistock to 6-1 win over WellesleyWellesley Sun, Oct 19, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Matthew Lupton lifted the Tavistock Braves to a 6-1 victory with a hat trick against the Wellesley Applejacks. Lupton's first goal came 8:11 into the second period. He then added goals at 10:48 into the second and at 4:44 into the third.Wellesley was stymied by Tavistock's netminder Ben Larder, who stopped 28 shots during the victory. The solid play of Larder will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.04. The Braves forced Applejacks' goalies to work between the pipes, totaling 55 shots and forcing 49 saves. Brayden Bruce made 39 stops and Tim Bester made 10. Tavistock stifled the Applejacks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Braves found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Tavistock averages 2.8 goals per contest. The defensemen of the Braves were also effective in Wellesley's zone, and came away with three goals. Tavistock was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 28 penalty minutes. Tavistock additionally got points from Jake Wiffen, who also had one goal and one assist and Josh Higgins, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Tavistock also got a goal from Charlie Irwin as well. More assists for Tavistock came via Jamie Shoemaker, who had two and Greg Hansford, Tristan Hohl, Tayler Trachsel, and Angus Rowland, who each chipped in one. The Applejacks got their opportunities on the power play, but did not convert any of their 11 chances. Wellesley could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game. The Applejacks were led by Sean McEwan, who scored the team's only goal. McEwan scored 2:59 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Braves registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. For Tavistock, Hansford and Rowland were ejected from the contest.
