Norwich outlasts Wellesley, 5-4Norwich Community Center Fri, Oct 10, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Norwich Merchants and the Wellesley Applejacks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Norwich made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-4. The Merchants gained the winning advantage on a goal by Derek Slaght 8:07 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. Norwich's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Wellesley power plays. The Merchants kept Wellesley's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tim Bester made 29 saves on 34 shots. Norwich found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Merchants have scored at the pace of 2.5 goals per game during the current campaign. Norwich was led by Mitchell Berzins, who tallied two goals. Berzins scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:52 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Merchants had taken the advantage when the Applejacks' Jacob Younger got sent off for tripping. Kurtis Lavis picked up the assist. Berzins' next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Norwich with eight seconds left in the second period. Lavis assisted on the tally. Norwich additionally got points from Jordan Gillis, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ryan Stephenson also scored for Norwich. In addition, Norwich received assists from Harlen Vanwynsberghe, who had one and Braeden Shand, who had two. Wellesley was led by Cal Jefferies, who registered two goals. Jefferies scored the first of his two goals at 1:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wellesley. Justin Lebold provided the assist. Jefferies' next tally made the score 4-4 with 18:01 left in the third period. The Applejacks played down a man on Eric Heffernan's bench / coach. Lebold picked up the assist. Wellesley also had goals scored by Reid Denstedt and Sean McEwan, who each put in one. More assists for Wellesley came via Mackenzie Sealy, Paul Morra, Tysen Willemsen, and Coleton Madge, who contributed one each. Norwich's Patrick Maziarz stopped 16 shots out of the 20 that he faced. The Merchants incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Wellesley incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Applejacks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Taylor Doering was ejected from the game.
