Burford squeaks by Ayr, 5-4Burford Community Centre Sat, Sep 27, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Burford Bulldogs and the Ayr Centennials were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Burford made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-4. No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Adam Harris at 12:14 of the third period. Harris had a great game for the Bulldogs, netting two goals. Burford pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 22 penalty minutes. The Bulldogs excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Others who scored for Burford included Jack Battaglia, Hayden Stewart, and Jesse Brooks, who scored one goal each. In addition, Burford received assists from Connor Merritt, who had two and Chris Grand, Quinn Stefanelli, and Mitch Randell, who contributed one each. Ayr stifled Burford's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bulldogs were unable to stop the Centennials from sending pucks towards the net, and Ayr eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. The Centennials were led by Brendan Schaefer, who grabbed two goals. Schaefer scored the first of his two goals at 10:29 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Burford. Jackson White assisted on the tally. Schaefer's next tally made the score 3-3 with 2:18 left in the second period. Riley Clipper picked up the assist. Ayr also had goals scored by Jake Whibbs and Alex Ritchie, who each put in one. More assists for Ayr came via Jessen DaSilva, who had one and Jeff Howlett and Anthony Pullia, who contributed two each. Riley Edwards rejected 32 shots on goal for Burford. The Bulldogs registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. Burford ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Randell was ejected from the game. Lee Doherty recorded 25 saves for Ayr. The Centennials incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
