Ayr wins tough contest against Tavistock, 5-3

The Ayr Centennials and the Tavistock Braves were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Ayr made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Anthony Pullia's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Tavistock's power play was ineffective against the Centennials' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Ayr was paced by Connor MacLean, who finished with one goal. MacLean scored on the power play 5:00 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Ayr. The Centennials earned a power play opportunity when Jamie Shoemaker was put in the box for checking from behind.

Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Ayr could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 52 minutes in penalties during the game.

Ayr also got points from Carver Ormiston, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Pullia, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Ayr included Mackenzie Kemp and Austin Kovrig, who scored one goal each. In addition, Ayr received assists from Riley Clipper, Logan Beechey, and Brendan Schaefer, who contributed one each.

The Braves were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. Tavistock surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Braves were helped by Dylan Yantzi, who registered one goal. Yantzi scored 15:50 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Ayr. Tristan Hohl picked up the assist. Liam Kelly also scored for Tavistock. More assists for Tavistock came via Jared Yantzi, Jake Wiffen, and Matthew Lupton, who each chipped in one.

Will Rawski recorded 26 saves for the Centennials. Ayr registered three goals on 14 power play opportunities. Nathan Bigelow took the loss and made 15 saves before being replaced by Ben Larder who made six saves. For Tavistock, Shoemaker and Maverick Petrie were ejected from the contest.
