Ayr outlasts Tavistock, 4-2North Dumfries Sun, Sep 14, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Ayr Centennials gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Tavistock Braves. No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Jackson White at 5:40 of the second period. Ayr was sparked by Brendan Schaefer, who had one goal. Schaefer scored on the power play 11:04 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Ayr. The Centennials had gotten the advantage when Tavistock's Jake Wiffen was sent off for cross checking. Logan Beechey assisted on the tally. In the losing effort, the Braves were led by Josh Higgins, who racked up two goals. Higgins scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:44 into the second period to make the score 1-1. A checking from behind penalty on Carver Osrmiston had put Tavistock on the power play. Higgins' next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Ayr with 7:55 left in the third period. The Braves earned a power play opportunity when Eric Hackborn was put in the box for head contact. Angus Rowland picked up the assist. Ayr's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 75 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 62.0 minutes per game the Centennials had been spending in the box. Ayr kept Tavistock's goalie busy throughout the game, and Ben Larder made 28 saves on 32 shots. Ayr also got points from White, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ayr also had goals scored by Jeff Howlett and Sean Mitchell, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Ayr were Riley Clipper, Austin Sine, and Alex Ritchie, who contributed one each. The Braves were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on 13 chances. Tavistock could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game. Lee Doherty rejected 23 shots on goal for the Centennials. Ayr registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For the Centennials, Mackenzie Kemp and Osrmiston were ejected from the contest.
