Schomberg wins tough contest against Midland, 5-4Trisan Centre Thu, Nov 27, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Schomberg Cougars gutted out a close 5-4 win against the Midland Flyers. Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Derek Neilly's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker. In a losing effort, Midland was paced by Evan Buehler, who racked up two goals and one assist. Buehler scored the first of his two goals short handed at 3:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Midland. The Flyers played down a man on Daniel Pickering's roughing. Steven Pickard assisted on the tally. Buehler's next tally short handed made the score 2-1 Midland with 5:01 left in the first period. Midland had taken the advantage when Schomberg's Ian Reid got sent off for slashing. Jason Stone provided the assist. The Cougars were led by Neilly, who had one goal. Neilly scored 16:50 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Schomberg. Declan Lampe picked up the assist. Schomberg's offense rang up 34 shots on the Flyers' net. Team could not crack Midland's penalty kill and was held to one power play goal while having 11 opportunities to play with the man advantage. The Cougars got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. Schomberg could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game. Schomberg additionally got points from Lampe, who also registered one goal and one assist, Nathan Sinclair, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Justin Formenton, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Schomberg also got a goal from Brandon Yorke as well. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Francesco Corona, who had two and Liam Spurgeon, Mitchell Robinson, John Gage, and Blake Culley, who contributed one each. The Flyers forced the Cougars goalie Luke Gamoyda to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots. Midland's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Flyers finished with 48 penalty minutes. Midland also had goals scored by Ben Skuce and Curtis Rawn, who each put in one. More assists for Midland came via Jon Goldsworthy, Nick Heins, Bobby Logan, Neal Burgess, and Will Craig, who each chipped in one. Schomberg's Gamoyda stopped 33 shots out of the 37 that he faced. For the Cougars, JP Crescenzi was ejected from the game. Matt Camilleri rejected 29 shots on goal for Midland. The Flyers registered two goals on 11 power play opportunities. For Midland, Pickard and Callan Heins were ejected from the contest.
