Schomberg survives Midland comeback, wins 5-3

The Midland Flyers almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the Schomberg Cougars managed to pull out a 5-3 win in the end.

Schomberg led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Cougars' Kiefer McIntosh scored at 12:35 in the second period to put Schomberg up 4-1.

The Cougars did not rack up many penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. Schomberg fell short of the 33.0 minutes average penalties per game. The Cougars forced Midland goalie Matt Camilleri to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. Schomberg was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on 12 chances.

The Cougars were helped by Connor Whiteside, who registered one goal. Whiteside scored on the power play 6:57 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Schomberg. A slashing penalty on Nick Heins had put Schomberg on the power play. McIntosh assisted on the tally. Schomberg additionally got points from McIntosh, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Blake Culley, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Schomberg also had goals scored by Ryley Egerton and Tanner Smith, who each put in one. In addition, Schomberg received assists from John Gage, who had three and Mitchell Robinson and Matthew Hudgin, who contributed one each.

The Flyers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Midland had been averaging 24.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Flyers' offense rang up 42 shots on the Cougars' net.

Midland was helped by Steven Pickard, who tallied one goal. Pickard scored on the power play 19:01 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Flyers had gotten the advantage when Schomberg's Tristan Joseph was sent off for slashing. Tully Jackson picked up the assist. Others who scored for Midland included Bobby Logan and Evan Buehler, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Midland were Daniel Pickering, who had one.

The Cougars' Taylor Ewart stopped 39 shots out of the 42 that he faced. For Schomberg, Nathan Sinclair was ejected from the game. Camilleri rejected 38 shots on goal for Midland. The Flyers registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. For Midland, Jimmy Walter and Jake Evans were ejected from the contest.
