Schomberg vanquishes Midland in shootout, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Schomberg Cougars defeated the Midland Flyers in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Joseph Mete had two goals and one assist to lead Schomberg. Mete scored the first of his two goals at 3:24 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Liam Spurgeon provided the assist. Mete's next tally made the score 3-1 Schomberg with 14:35 left in the second period. Tristan Joseph picked up the assist.

The Cougars' offense rang up 44 shots on Midland's net. Schomberg's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Cougars average 2.8 goals per contest.

Others who scored for Schomberg included JP Crescenzi, John Gage, and Brandon Yorke, who each put in one. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Ian Reid, Kiefer McIntosh, Matthew Hudgin, and Blake Culley, who contributed one each.

The Flyers were led by Evan Buehler, who finished with two goals and two assists. Buehler scored the first of his two goals at 36 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-4. Steven Pickard assisted on the tally. Buehler's next tally made the score 5-4 Midland with 14:06 left in the third period. Midland had gained a power play chance when Kevin Sarrazin was whistled for tripping. Daniel Pickering picked up the assist. Midland additionally got points from Pickering, who also registered one goal and one assist and Pickard, who also racked up two goals and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Midland were Jean-Philip Labonte, who had two and Jon Goldsworthy, Bobby Logan, Matt Smith, and Will Craig, who each chipped in one.

Schomberg's Taylor Ewart stopped 20 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Cougars incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Brandon Klerer made 38 saves for the Flyers on 43 shots. Midland incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Flyers, Tully Jackson was ejected from the game.
