Stayner wins tough contest against Schomberg, 4-2Trisan Centre Thu, Sep 18, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Stayner Siskins escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Schomberg Cougars. Stayner gained the winning advantage on a goal by Kyle Lafreniere 14:39 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer. The Siskins pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 48 penalty minutes. Stayner was paced by Christian Papineau, who racked up one goal. Papineau scored on the power play 14:14 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Stayner. The Siskins had taken the advantage when Schomberg's Brandon Savoy got sent off for cross checking. Quinton Bruce picked up the assist. Stayner kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Taylor Ewart made 31 saves on 35 shots. The defensemen of the Siskins were also effective in Schomberg's zone, and came away with two goals. Others who scored for Stayner included Ben Lougheed and Ryan Hudson, who scored one goal each. More assists for Stayner came via Sean Healy, who had two and Cooper Martin, Ryan Hyndman, and Derick Robertson, who each chipped in one. The Cougars racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 20 minors and one major for 55 minutes in penalty time. Schomberg surpassed its season average of 43.0 penalty minutes per game. The Cougars were helped by Colton Wood, who tallied one goal. Wood scored on the power play 16:34 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Stayner. Schomberg had gotten the advantage when Stayner's Hyndman was sent off for roughing. Tristan Joseph assisted on the tally. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Brandon Yorke and Justin Formenton, who contributed one each. Trevor Bloch rejected 18 shots on goal for the Siskins. Stayner registered four goals on 12 power play opportunities. The Cougars registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Schomberg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kiefer McIntosh was ejected from the game.
