Perth Thunder uses shootout to best Melbourne Ice, 5-4Melbourne ICE Ice House Sat, Aug 23, 2014 Riccardo Del Basso scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Perth Thunder picked up the extra point in a 5-4 win over Melbourne Ice. The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Melbourne Ice got a shootout goal from Tommy Powell. Perth Thunder's other shootout goal was scored by Andrew Cox.Perth Thunder saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Perth Thunder made the score 4-2 on a goal by Stuart Stefan at 9:19 in the third period. Melbourne Ice evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Powell at 14:23 in the third period. Perth Thunder's offense was clicking better than usual and put 18 shots on goal during the game, better than the 3.1 shots per game it averages. Perth Thunder's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to Melbourne Ice's power play unit. Perth Thunder was helped by Justin Fox, who finished with two goals and one assist. Fox scored the first of his two goals at 6:33 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Perth Thunder. Robert Haselhurst picked up the assist. Fox's next tally made the score 3-1 Perth Thunder with 6:30 left in the second period. Perth Thunder was on a disadvantage when Jordan Grover went off the ice for delay of game. Stefan provided the assist. Perth Thunder additionally got points from Stefan, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Perth Thunder also got a goal from Jordan Kyros as well. Melbourne Ice put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Perth Thunder to score on any of its three power plays. With 46 shots on target during the contest, Melbourne Ice exceeded the 3.6 shots it averages per game this year. Melbourne Ice was led by Matthew Armstrong, who registered one goal and two assists. Armstrong scored 11:32 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Perth Thunder. Ross Howell assisted on the tally. Melbourne Ice also got points from Lliam Webster, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Powell, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Jason Baclig, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Melbourne Ice received assists from Todd Graham and Jeremy Brown, who contributed one each. Mathieu Dugas recorded 42 saves for Perth Thunder. Perth Thunder incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Jaden Pine-Murphy made 13 saves for Melbourne Ice on 17 shots.
