Glanbrook vanquishes Grimsby in shootout, 6-5 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Glanbrook Rangers defeated the Grimsby Peach Kings in a shootout 6-5 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. Grimsby got a shootout goal from Curtis Conrad. In addition to the clincher, Glanbrook got a shootout goal from Brad Parish.

The Rangers came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Glanbrook was down 3-0 after a goal by the Peach Kings' Michael Konkle at 10:30 in the first period. The Rangers knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Spencer Leenders at 19:24 in the third period.

With four goals and one assist between them, Leenders and Noah Matteson teamed up to power Glanbrook's offense. Leenders grabbed two goals and Matteson also added two goals and one assist.

Grimsby was unable to stop the Rangers from sending pucks towards the net, and Glanbrook eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. Penalties took their toll on the Rangers, as their penalty kill unit let in three power play goals.

Glanbrook additionally got points from Curtis Edwards, who also had one goal and one assist and Matteson, who also racked up two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Glanbrook came via Garnet Batrynchuk, who had three and Drew Jedrzejewicz, Chris Haigh, Owen Norton, and Cameron Frail, who contributed one each.

The Peach Kings' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Grimsby is averaging 2.4 goals against for the season.

The Peach Kings were helped by Brennan Smith, who finished with two goals. Smith scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:06 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Grimsby. Grimsby had taken the advantage when Glanbrook's Nathan Fiorino got sent off for tripping. Matthew Jambrosich provided the assist. Smith's next tally on the power play made the score 4-2 Grimsby with 11:08 left in the second period. The Peach Kings earned a power play opportunity when Malcom Toman was put in the box for roughing. Griffin Roubos picked up the assist. Grimsby also got points from Nicholas Purves, who also registered one goal and one assist. Andrew McMurtrie also scored for Grimsby. In addition, Grimsby received assists from Aidan McCreadie, Christian Gaetano, Jeromy Hopkins, and Curtis Jacques, who each chipped in one.

The Rangers' Matthew Venturelli stopped 20 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Glanbrook totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. The Rangers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Fiorino was ejected from the game. Marcus Hlywka rejected 33 shots on goal for Grimsby. The Peach Kings incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
