Niagara wins tough contest against Hagersville, 3-2

The Niagara Riverhawks and the Hagersville Hawks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Niagara made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Alex Cipriano's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The Riverhawks were paced by Cipriano, who tallied one goal. Cipriano scored 42 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-2 Niagara. Jakob Reeves provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:11 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Niagara had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just one goal on nine chances.

Others who scored for Niagara included Lucas Marcon and Zack Mulvale, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara were Kyle Robertson, Dylan Lazarus, Brandon McLean, and Drew Trendle, who contributed one each.

Hagersville kept the Riverhawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Scott Charanduk made 35 saves on 37 shots. The Hawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 25 minutes in penalties during the game.

Hagersville was helped by Matt Rimac, who had one goal. Rimac scored on the power play 26 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Hagersville. Jacob Solomon picked up the assist. Kyle Phibbs also scored for Hagersville. More assists for Hagersville came via Cole Martin, Derek Friesen, and Dan Mederios, who each chipped in one.

Niagara ended with 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors and two majors. For the Riverhawks, Bobby LaPlante and Mulvale were ejected from the contest. Curtis Dortenzio made 27 saves for the Hawks on 30 shots. Hagersville registered two goals on six power play opportunities. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Clayton Millard was ejected from the game.
