Toledo outlasts Southern Tier, 4-2

The Toledo Cherokee and the Southern Tier Xpress were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Toledo made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Zach Swanson at 2:27 of the second period.

The Cherokee got the win with help from a great game by Swanson, who had one goal and two assists.

Toledo excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Cherokee forced Southern Tier goalie Cody Gibson to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Toledo additionally got points from Brody Duncan, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Toledo also had goals scored by Dominic Pisanti and Kyle Downey, who scored one goal each. In addition, Toledo received assists from Michael Pisanti, Mark McGee, Jimmy Howell, and Cody Estrel, who contributed one each.

The Xpress found themselves short handed often, totaling 20 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays.

Southern Tier was helped by Mark Sunde, who had one goal. Sunde scored 6:44 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Luke Sunde assisted on the tally. Isaiah Crawford also scored for Southern Tier. More assists for Southern Tier came via Tim Weisgerber, who had one and Brandon Desrosiers, who had two.

Glen Bates rejected 19 shots on goal for Toledo. The Cherokee incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Gibson recorded 33 saves for the Xpress.
