Topeka blows out Point Mallard, 8-1

The Topeka Capitals had a five-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 8-1 win over the Point Mallard Ducks.

Point Mallard's power play was ineffective against Topeka's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Capitals racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Topeka had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Capitals forced Ducks' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 31 shots and forcing 23 saves. Roman Bengert made seven stops and Aaron Brickman made 16. Topeka bested its season scoring average. The Capitals have scored at the pace of 4.2 goals per game during the current campaign.

Topeka was helped by Trey Opack, who registered two goals and one assist. Opack scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:55 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Topeka. The Capitals earned a power play opportunity when Justin Provencher was put in the box for head contact. Alex Sauer assisted on the tally. Opack's next tally on the power play made the score 5-0 Topeka with 11:59 left in the second period. Hank Roers provided the assist. Topeka also got points from Sauer, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Alex Johanson also scored for Topeka. More assists for Topeka came via Drew Kelly, who had two and Tre Kautzman and Jack Cleaver, who contributed one each.

The Ducks were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. Point Mallard surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Ducks did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Point Mallard averages 3.9 goals per game.

Ryan Lund recorded 21 saves for Topeka. The Capitals registered three goals on six power play opportunities.
