Toledo blows out Southern Tier, 6-1

The Toledo Cherokee were firing on all cylinders against the Southern Tier Xpress, and when the final buzzer sounded Cherokee emerged with a 6-1 win.

Toledo got the win on the strength of a great game by Brody Duncan, who had one goal and two assists. Duncan scored on the power play 7:28 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Toledo. The Cherokee had gained a power play chance when Brandon Desrosiers was whistled for holding. Evan Heldt picked up the assist.

Southern Tier fell victim to a deadly Toledo power play, which ripped the Xpress for four goals.

The Cherokee put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Southern Tier to score on any of its five power plays. Toledo's goal total was higher than its season average. The Cherokee have scored at the pace of 3.2 goals per game during the current campaign.

Toledo additionally got points from Tyler Zalecki, who also registered one goal and two assists and Mark McGee, who also tallied one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Toledo included Michael Pisanti, Cam Schwartz, and Cody Estrel, who scored one goal each. More assists for Toledo came via Dominic Pisanti, Nikolas Verbosky, and Kyle Downey, who each chipped in one.

The Xpress' offense operated below their season average. Southern Tier puts an average of 4.0 pucks into the net per game. The Xpress could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Glen Bates recorded 20 saves for Toledo. The Cherokee incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Southern Tier's Cody Gibson stopped 24 shots out of the 30 that he faced.
