Pittsburgh vanquishes Cleveland in shootout, 3-2 (4-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Pittsburgh Vengeance defeated the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks in a shootout 3-2 (4-2 SO).

The shootout featured nine attempts between both teams. Cleveland got shootout goals from Tyler Houmard and Tyler Dalton. In addition to the clincher, Pittsburgh got shootout goals from Nils Markgren, Tyler Speis, and Cody Black.

The Vengeance came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Pittsburgh fell behind 2-1 after a goal by the Jr. Lumberjacks' Houmard at 9:07 in the third period. The Vengeance knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Markgren at 12:27 in the third period.

Cleveland was unable to stop Pittsburgh from sending pucks towards the net, and the Vengeance eventually piled up 37 shots on goal.

Pittsburgh also got points from Bryan Hovanec, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Pittsburgh came via Black and Gavin Cummings, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Lumberjacks forced Pittsburgh goalie Brian Baker to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Cleveland found itself short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing three power plays.

The Jr. Lumberjacks were helped by John Barlow, who grabbed one goal. Barlow scored 31 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-0 Cleveland. Dalton assisted on the tally. In addition, Cleveland received assists from Avery Huibregtse, Aaron Schmitt, and Buddy Rose, who contributed one each.

Baker recorded 38 saves for the Vengeance. Pittsburgh incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Cleveland's Sam Pikus stopped 34 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Jr. Lumberjacks registered zero goals on two power play opportunities.
