Minnesota uses shootout to best Breezy Point, 5-4 (4-3 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Minnesota Flying Aces defeated the Breezy Point North Stars in a shootout 5-4 (4-3 SO).

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams. Breezy Point got shootout goals from Joe Costello, Tyler Larwood, and Brooke Evans. Minnesota also got shootout goals from Bradee Thompson, Zachary Johnston, and AJ Gullickson.

The Flying Aces overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Minnesota fell behind 4-1 after a short handed goal by the North Stars' Costello at 11:12 in the third period. The Flying Aces tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Johnston at 12:11 in the third period.

Travis Johnston was all over the ice for Minnesota, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Johnston scored 9:07 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Breezy Point. Johnston provided the assist.

The Flying Aces forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game Minnesota had been spending in the box. The Flying Aces forced Breezy Point goalie Levi Goosmann to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Minnesota's goal total was higher than its season average. The Flying Aces have scored at the pace of 2.1 goals per game during the current campaign.

Minnesota also got points from Johnston, who also had one goal and two assists and Jesse Brown, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Minnesota also got a goal from Blake Neumann as well. In addition, Minnesota received assists from Matt Heim, who had one.

Minnesota was unable to stop the North Stars from sending pucks towards the net, and Breezy Point eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. The North Stars found themselves short handed often, totaling 44 penalty minutes and allowing eight power plays.

Breezy Point was led by Ryan Mezera, who grabbed three goals. More assists for Breezy Point came via Linder Kenyon, Ryan Herbert, Larwood, and Jordan Carey, who contributed one each.

The Flying Aces' Dakota McDonald stopped 35 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Goosmann rejected 27 shots on goal for the North Stars. Breezy Point registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
