Peoria wins tough contest against West Michigan, 5-3

The Peoria Mustangs and the West Michigan Wolves were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Peoria made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Mitchell McPherson at 57 seconds of the second period.

The Mustangs got the win thanks to a great game by McPherson, who had two goals and one assist. McPherson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 15:20 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Peoria had gained a power play chance when Josh Somers was whistled for hooking. Kai Barber picked up the assist. McPherson's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Peoria with 19:03 left in the second period. Marc Peters assisted on the tally.

The Mustangs' Nicholas Piech was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 27 saves and let only one puck past him. Piech managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.11 prior to the game.

Peoria additionally got points from Marshall Gevers, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Peoria also had goals scored by Levi Armstrong and Nathan Scofield, who each put in one. More assists for Peoria came via Austin Ziakas, who had two.

West Michigan forced Peoria goalie Piech to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

The Wolves were helped by Devin Farkas, who finished with one goal. Farkas scored on the power play 4:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 West Michigan. West Michigan had gotten the advantage when the Mustangs' Peters was sent off for holding. Dakota Ulmer picked up the assist. West Michigan also got points from Ulmer, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, West Michigan received assists from Corey Siwula, Steven Rhodes, Tim Foley, Mike Difranco, and Shawn Adam, who contributed one each.

Peoria incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Kyler Patenaude took the loss and made 10 saves before being replaced by Chase Stanford who made 15 saves. The Wolves incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
