Helena beats Yellowstone 11-0 as Martens gains shutout

Grant Martens was superb between the pipes for the Helena Bighorns, as he did not allow a goal in an 11-0 victory over the Yellowstone Quake.

Helena got the win thanks to a great game by Blake Babineau, who had one goal and two assists. Babineau scored 6:39 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Helena. Rory Bock provided the assist.

The Bighorns were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game Helena had been spending in the box. The Bighorns forced Yellowstone's netminders to work between the pipes, firing 53 shots and forcing 42 saves. Lance Knudson made 26 stops and Sean Leahy made 16. Helena stifled the Quake's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bighorns bested their season scoring average. Helena averages 4.1 goals per game.

Helena additionally got points from Brandon Mills, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Kendall Bolen-Porter, who also registered three goals and one assist, Brandt Miller, who also finished with one goal and three assists, and Brian Skillicorn, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Helena also had goals scored by Blake Preeshl, Elliot Hopkins, Matt Mohar, and Johnny Bonta, who each put in one. More assists for Helena came via Jay Forbes, who had one and Nick Trefry, who had two.

Yellowstone forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and two majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. The Quake surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Yellowstone could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Quake average 2.2 goals per game. Yellowstone forced the Bighorns goalie Martens to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Helena's Martens stopped 34 shots out of the 34 that he faced. The Bighorns registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. The Quake registered zero goals on six power play opportunities.
