Newel lifts Metro over West Michigan, 5-2

The Metro Jets relied on the scoring touch of Jason Newel, who netted two goals, to beat the West Michigan Wolves, 5-2.

Newel's tallies came at 41 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Metro and 8:57 into the third to make the score 3-1 Metro.

Metro stifled West Michigan's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Metro also got points from Andrew Sawyer, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Matt Dempsey, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Metro came via Zach Koonce, who had one and Kyle Shreve and Jake Sealy, who contributed two each.

The Wolves managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. West Michigan wound up below its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Jets were unable to stop the Wolves from sending pucks towards the net, and West Michigan eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

The Wolves were led by Devin Farkas, who tallied one goal and one assist. Farkas scored 19:19 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Matt Shultz provided the assist. West Michigan also got a goal from Josh Somers as well. In addition, West Michigan received assists from Michael Tratar, who had two.

Metro's Jake Stephan stopped 29 shots out of the 31 that he faced. The Jets incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Kyler Patenaude made 21 saves for West Michigan on 25 shots. The Wolves registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
