Southern Tier beats Cincinnati 5-2 as Sunde gets hat trick

The Cincinnati Swords could not stop the Southern Tier Xpress' Mark Sunde, who tallied a hat trick in a 5-2 win.

Sunde notched his first tally 11:20 into the first period. He then added goals at 19:31 into the second and at 19:12 into the third.

Southern Tier's penalty kill excelled, as the Xpress gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Southern Tier racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. The Xpress surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game.

Southern Tier additionally got points from Luke Sunde, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Southern Tier also got a goal from Alec Hooper as well. Other players who recorded assists for Southern Tier were Brandon Desrosiers, who had two and Curtis Carlson, Aleksandr Koshelev, and Brian Grant, who contributed one each.

Cincinnati forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Swords had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Cincinnati was helped by Tim VanTuinen, who grabbed one goal. VanTuinen scored 6:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cincinnati. Blake Hinds also scored for Cincinnati. In addition, Cincinnati received assists from Oliver Ahlberg and Andrew Bond, who each chipped in one.

Cody Gibson rejected 20 shots on goal for Southern Tier. The Xpress registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Tyler Berry and Koshelev were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Swords' Brandon Kruger stopped 21 shots out of the 26 that he faced.
