Early goals doom Sugar Land, falls to Topeka, 9-4

The Topeka Capitals opened up a four-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 9-4 win over the Sugar Land Imperials.

Alex Johanson was all over the ice for Topeka, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Johanson scored the first of his two goals at 7:20 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Topeka. Kyle Rimbach picked up the assist. Johanson's next tally made the score 3-0 Topeka with 6:27 left in the first period. Colin OConner provided the assist.

The Capitals forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Topeka had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Capitals forced Sugar Land's goalies to work between the pipes, launching 61 shots and forcing 52 saves. Colton Anderson made 43 stops and Timothy OSullivan made nine. Topeka found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Capitals average 3.6 goals per game.

Topeka additionally got points from Igor Valko, who also registered one goal and one assist, Rimbach, who also had one goal and two assists, Hank Roers, who also racked up two goals and one assist, and Trey Opack, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Topeka also got a goal from Tre Kautzman as well. More assists for Topeka came via Spencer Sabourin, who had two and Richard Yusa, John Crusinberry, Drew Kelly, Benton Deanovich, and Steve MacIver, who each chipped in one.

The Imperials were led by Tyler Johnson, who registered one goal and two assists. Johnson scored 17:43 into the third period to make the score 9-4 Topeka. Frank Muscarella picked up the assist. Sugar Land also got points from Muscarella, who also had one goal and one assist. Frazer Ellis also scored for Sugar Land. In addition, Sugar Land received assists from Alex Tilman, who had one.

Topeka's Bailey Aust stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Capitals registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Sugar Land totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play.
