Granite City shrugs off penalties, upends Wisconsin, 5-1

The Wisconsin Whalers failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Granite City Lumberjacks shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-1.

Granite City was sparked by Mitchell Gwost, who racked up one goal and one assist. Gwost scored on the power play 13:22 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Granite City. The Lumberjacks had gotten the advantage when Wisconsin's Alex Anderson was sent off for cross checking. Tanner Skaja picked up the assist.

Granite City's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Granite City also got points from Skaja, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Granite City also got a goal from Tobias Gabrielsen as well. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were David Horsmann, who had two and Blake Phenow, Spencer Nelson, Brady Bernhardson, Alek Groth, and Dallas Marvin, who each chipped in one.

The Whalers' offense operated below their season average. Wisconsin averages 3.5 goals per game. Team could not crack the Lumberjacks' penalty kill and was held to one power play goal while having 10 opportunities to play with the man advantage.

Kendall Meyer rejected 14 shots on goal for Granite City. The Lumberjacks incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Evan Moyse recorded 24 saves for the Whalers. Wisconsin incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
